Those who recognize the blog’s name as a reference to Edward Norton’s alternate personality in Fight Club might be surprised to find that it’s devoted to celebrity gossip, but that’s just what WWTDD delivers. The anonymous blogger behind the site writes as the Tyler Durden persona, bringing an unusual perspective to the world of gossip blogs.
The site compiles most of its content from around the web, photos of scantily-clad actresses and models in particular. With liberal use of quotes from the original sources, WWTDD adds commentary to celebrity news stories that is razor sharp, though considerably more mean than witty.
WWTDD fans are of the type that disdain rather than admire celebrities, and the site caters to the irreverent star-bashing crowd by calling women “fatties,” using NSFW (not safe for work) language and making off-color jokes that might offend casual users (some referring to rape or misogynistic acts).
A sidebar labeled “Crowd Faves” shows what the regular readers are really here for: headlines like “Ana Faris Is Completely Naked” and “Selena Gomez Bikini Pictures.” Steamy photo collections prove why the site was named one of Mashable’s 30 Most Salacious Celebrity Gossip Sites on the Internet in 2008.
While the sarcastic tone may be a turnoff for some, WWTDD’s regular fans can’t get enough. A reviewer and reader once weighed in: “The best part about the site is that Durden doesn’t just report the facts; he adds his own commentary. When someone does something dumb, Durden calls him or her on it using the most profane language and analogies available.”
What Would Tyler Durden Do is part of Buzz Media Entertainment, a division of the Buzz Media company, which also produces Celebuzz, Stereogum, The Superficial, Idolator and Go Fug Yourself.
