The damage from Tiger Woods’ infamous car crash in 2009 spread even further than anyone could imagine. David Rothenburg, a former nurse at the hospital that night, was later fired for improperly gaining access to Tiger Woods’ medical records.
Allegedly, he accessed Woods’ medical records three times in a ten-minute period. Because Woods was not a patient of Rothenburg’s that evening, this is considered a violation of HIPPA rules and is a felony under the law.
According to WFTV.com, Rothenburg has recently filed suit to get his job and reputation back. Rothenburg claims he did not access Woods’ personal medical records. Instead, he left himself logged into the computer, and three other people gained access to the medical records.
Gee, just three? In all likelihood, Rothenburg and more than three others viewed Woods’ medical records that evening because really, who could resist? Rothenburg claims hospital management made a rash decision. Allegedly, the golf star pressured the hospital to punish some of the employees who had accessed Woods’ medical records. Rothenburg thinks he caught the brunt of yet another of Tiger’s rants.
Rothenburg claims that the hospital should have done a more thorough investigation into the breach, rather than lay the blame simply on him. Faced with a dismal future as an ex-nurse, Rothenburg decided to file suit for more than $100,000.
