Stevie Wonder and wife Kai Millard Morris initially separated back in October 2009, and now Wonder has filed the necessary paperwork to make their split permanent.
TMZ obtained a copy this past Friday of the music icon’s divorce petition filed under his legal name. Wonder’s court docs cite irreconcilable differences as grounds for divorce and indicate that he is willing to pay child support for the couple’s two young sons, Kailand and Mandla, and spousal support for Morris. They also and show he has requested joint custody of their two young sons.
The smoothness on this celebrity divorce will depend on a number of different factors. The one presently receiving the most amount of attention from the press is how the pair chooses to handle dividing their marital property. (Which makes sense, given the fact that Wonder has been active in the music industry since the early 60s.) Wonder and Morris will each have a divorce lawyer by their side to protect their best interests as they negotiate how to share their assets, in particular those amassed between when the pair married in 2001 and split in 2009. Based on his petition, we know that Wonder’s lawyer is Laura A. Wasser of the Law Offices of Wasser, Cooperman & Carter in L.A.
Wonder’s paperwork went to a courthouse for review on July 26th but there is no word yet on whether Morris has filed her response.
