Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage meeti...

Image via Wikipedia

It’s previously been reported that Nicolas Cage owed the IRS over $6-million in back-taxes from the year 2007 alone and was reportedly a number of payments behind on a $2-million line of credit from one of his banks.

In an effort to make sure they get paid, the IRS put a federal tax lien on the actor’s various pieces of real estate on Dec. 31 in addition to another bill of over $6-million to cover all unpaid taxes for 2008.

In total, Cage now owes the IRS about $14-million. Yikes.

In attempt to clear things up, Cage told TMZ, “Over the course of my career I have paid at least $70 million in taxes. Unfortunately, due to a recent legal situation, another approximate $14 million is owed to the IRS. However, I am under new business management and am happy to say that I am current for 2009. All taxes will be paid including any to be determined state taxes.”

Tax evasion is a felony, and Cage is certainly not the first celebrity to break the law and avoid paying the IRS. Why is it that celebs think they’re above the law and can evade paying taxes with no penalty?

As Ben Franklin once said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes.”

"Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans" Screening- 2009 Toronto International Film FestivalIt all starts with Greed.  Greed, Greed, Greed.  Why is it that people who make a lot of money always end up broke?  Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage is filing suit against his ex-business manager Samuel Levin for $19 Million in damages for leaving him on the edge of financial collapse.

Levin is countersuing Cage, claiming the star failed to take his advice to curb his lavish spending habits.

Why do these people put so much trust in others?  Cause they want more!  More money, more fame, more houses, more cars, more toys.  I’m sure you’ve all hear what Mr. Cage spends his money on…

  • Bought a Dinosaur Skull for $276,000
  • King Cobra Snakes w/ Antidote (really? why?)
  • Action Comics #1 (actually I think this one is pretty cool)
  • Has two islands down in the Bahamas (one isn’t enough?)
  • And a whole bunch of properties

Some people just live too big.  Well, it’s time to trade it all in.  Hope one of those houses wasn’t in Texas.  I know of a good Dallas bankruptcy lawyer if you need one.

BREAKING NEWS: Debt-ridden Nicolas Cage sells his 18th century castle near Bath, EnglandAnd the story gets even worst for Nicolas Cage.  His ex-girlfriend is claiming that he owes her $13+ and their Los Angles’ Hancock Park neighborhood home, which he has been ordered to leave.

Part of Cage’s problem also comes from him not paying his taxes in 2007 and owes the Internal Revenue Service more than $6.6 million.  If ol’ Nicolas just put his money away for a rainy day rather then living the high life, it probably wouldn’t be pouring.

Well, don’t forget about that Dallas Bankruptcy Attorney if you’re ever in town.

IRS Files Tax Lien on Nicolas Cage’s Louisiana Property

It looks like actor Nicolas Cage doesn’t understand the sure things in life: death and taxes. Cage has joined a celebrated list of individuals who have forgotten they have to pay taxes to Uncle Sam. Nicolas Cage has been indicted for tax fraud because he neglected to pay his 2007 income tax to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Reports have said he owes the IRS over $6,000,000.

Tax Fraud and Celebrity White Collar Criminals

Tax fraud is considered a white collar crime. A white collar crime involves business or financial conspiracies by a respected person, government official, or business person. The Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation investigates cases of federal white collar crimes.

Louisiana Tax Lien

The IRS has placed a tax lien on Cage’s Louisiana home which had been up for sale. A tax lien is when the IRS stakes a claim on your property in exchange for the tax you owe them.

This isn’t Cage’s first run in with the IRS. In 2008, he improperly filed his personal expenses and paid over $660,000 to the IRS.

Other Celebrity Tax Evaders

Cage isn’t the only Hollywood tax evader. Other stars that have been indicted for bilking the IRS are:

Helio Castroneves, 2008, tax evasion

Wesley Snipes, 2006, false refund claims

Richard Hatch, 2006, failing to report income from the show Survivor

Boris Becker, 2002, tax evasion

Darryl Strawberry, 1994, tax evasion

Pete Rose, 1990, tax evasion

Willie Nelson, 1990, tax evasion

Leona Helmsley, 1989, tax evasion

Nicolas Cage, I’m sure many of these stars will tell you – the IRS will always find you and yes, you will pay your taxes.
