On Valentine’s Day 2013, Rimes filed a malpractice lawsuit against Los Angeles dentist Dr. Duane C. McKay. The suit alleges that McKay misdiagnosed her dental problem and botched the dental work, derailing the singer’s career in the process. Rimes is seeking punitive damages for physical, psychological and emotional injuries as well as compensation for past and future lost earnings.

This marathon dental battle began approximately three years ago. Based on information included in the lawsuit, McKay suggested a radical array of treatments to address the singer’s discomfort and TMJ-related jaw pain. Since then, Rimes has undergone nine traumatic root canals that she detailed thoroughly in her petition. The dentist promised that veneers and crowns would improve her appearance and relieve the pain. Unfortunately, veneers were incorrectly applied to the singer’s upper front teeth, and at least one crown was improperly positioned. Rimes also underwent a bone graft and required physical therapy to recover from the procedure.

In this medical malpractice lawsuit, LeAnn Rimes alleges that the dentist was negligent in diagnosing her conditions and performing these procedures. As a result, she suffers from chronic gum bleeding, gum swelling and intense tooth pain. According to an article published by TMZ, Rimes has been tweeting to her fans throughout this dental ordeal. Back in October 2012, she was forced to cancel tour dates to complete additional oral surgeries. The suit also contends that the 30-year-old singer will be forced to cancel additional performances until procedures to correct the damage are complete.

Rimes and her legal team are seeking an unspecified amount of compensatory and punitive damages for faulty dental worked completed between December 2009 and April 2012. Her representatives have not commented on the pending lawsuit.
