Celebrity domestic violence charges: always unfortunate, often bizarre.

In October, former NFL linebacker Junior Seau was arrested outside his Oceanside, Calif., home on suspicion of domestic violence. Seau’s 25-year-old live-in girlfriend called authorities after an argument, during which Seau allegedly assaulted her.

According to Oceanside police, Seau’s girlfriend sustained minor injuries but did not require treatment. Two hours later, upon his return home, Seau was taken into police custody.

Nine hours later, Seau posted bail at the San Diego County Jail and was released. Next came this bizarre twist: Seau drove his white Cadillac SUV over a cliff embankment, crash-landing on the beach 30 feet below.

Back in 2006, sports page headlines and the sports community were buzzing over Seau for a different reason: his broken arm. As a member of the New England Patriots, Seau tackled Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson and snapped his right arm in the process, putting Seau on the injured list just after coming out of his first retirement.

Seau is now a free agent considering a second retirement, and football fans might be wondering if the post-arrest car wreck has done any further damage. Fortunately, Seau only sustained minor injuries as a result of driving over the cliff.

But why did he do it? Don’t be so quick to think it was a guilty conscience. Seau was cleared of domestic violence charges, and has since admitted that the accident was due to him falling asleep behind the wheel.
