After a disheartening season plagued by quarterback problems, the New York Jets have been busy in the 2013 off-season strengthening their offense. To this end, the Jets recently signed running back Michael Goodson, a journeyman player with a respectable record of 722 yards and three touchdowns over 40 games. Unfortunately, Goodson’s recent arrest in New Jersey could see him being cut by the team.

According to various news reports, Goodson was a passenger in a GMC Yukon that was found stopped in the center lane of an interstate highway around 3:00 a.m. on May 17 in northern New Jersey. A tow truck driver reportedly came across the vehicle and called 911 to report that Goodson did not look well. The running back was taken to a hospital while law enforcement officers approached the driver.

The NFL’s stance on firearm possession

Tampa criminal defense lawyers who represent Buccaneer players are probably familiar with the NFL’s low tolerance for firearm possession and registration by players and employees. If Goodson is convicted of carrying an unregistered or otherwise illegal weapon, there is a good chance the Jets will release him from his contract.

To make matters worse, Goodson allegedly had marijuana in his possession before he was transported to the hospital. In the vehicle, police officers reportedly found more marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a .45 caliber handgun and hollow-point ammunition. Goodson was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and a firearm.

The driver, Garant Evans, faces the same charges plus one count of driving under the influence. He reportedly already has a prior felony conviction.

Actor Edward Walter Furlong, who is perhaps best remembered for his roles as the young John Connor in the sci-fi blockbuster Terminator 2: Judgment Day and as a would-be white supremacist in the Oscar-nominated film American History X, was arrested by deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on May 16.

On the evening of May 16th, LA deputies responded to a call made by a woman who complained about an altercation and a possible violation of a restraining order by Furlong. Tabloid media outlets have reported that Furlong was booked and charged with a felony.

From misdemeanor to felony charges

Criminal defense attorneys know that tumultuous relationships can easily escalate into criminal charges. That seems to be the case with Furlong, whose criminal history began with two drinking and driving charges in 2001 — from the same day. After stints in rehab and an arrest for misdemeanor public intoxication in 2004, Furlong was the subject of a restraining order filed by his former wife Rachel Kneeland in 2010. He was arrested again in 2011 for violating the restraining order.

Furlong was sentenced to probation after violating the first protection order served against him; this was one of his first felony convictions. In October 2012, he was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence after an incident involving a heated argument with his girlfriend at the Los Angeles International Airport; that charge was later reduced to misdemeanor battery.

Shortly after Valentine’s Day 2013, a Los Angeles judge recommended that Furlong be arrested until his violation hearing in March; he posted bail in the amount of $250,000 and continued serving his probation sentence.

Furlong’s most recent arrest violates not only his probation but also the standing protection order against him. When deputies arrived to the scene, they allegedly found Furlong hiding under a stairwell in a property near his former girlfriend’s residence. He was later photographed coming out of jail with fresh fingerprinting ink on his thumbs.

Unfortunately, not all of these stories are positive. Even the biggest celebrities can become embroiled in serious legal troubles that threaten their careers and finances. Here’s the roundup of last week’s celebrity lawsuit news.

Recently filed lawsuits

Las Vegas hotel mogul Kirk Kerkorian’s ex-wife has filed court documents alleging that the billionaire is being held hostage by his business managers. The legendary hotelier was last seen in public in June 2012. Ex-wife Lisa Kerkorian is asking the courts to appoint a conservator for Kerkorian’s estate and ensure that he can see his young stepdaughter.

Actor David Cassidy is being sued by the law firm of Rodier & Rodier in connection with unpaid legal bills. The firm alleges that Cassidy racked up $135,000 in attorney’s fees but has only paid $25,000. The firm is asking the courts to order Cassidy to pay the remaining $110,000.

A female paparazzo who works topless is suing the NYPD. Photographer Holly Van Voast claims that she has been arrested and harassed for working topless even though doing so is not prohibited by city laws. Van Voast claims that she has been falsely imprisoned and is suing for unspecified damages.

Rapper Heavy D’s brother has filed court documents in an attempt to claim control of the late performer’s estate. Floyd Myers claims that Heavy D wrote a will in the late 1990s but lost his only copy. Myers is asking that the entirety of Heavy D’s estate be awarded to him despite the fact that Heavy D’s daughter was born after the will he lost was drafted. Lawton estate planning lawyers can tell you this case will be, undoubtedly, an uphill battle for Myers.

Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy is being sued by a woman who claims that the football star assaulted her in December 2012 prior to kicking her off his party bus. McCoy’s lawyers maintain that he did make the woman leave the bus but absolutely did not assault her. The woman is suing McCoy for unspecified damages.

Horror director Eli Roth’s Goretorium has been sued by a design company who claims that the Las Vegas haunted house has failed to pay $50,000 in design bills. The company, Uprising Creative, is asking a judge to force Goretorium to pay the bill plus legal fees.

Philaldelphia 76ers guard Nick Young is being sued by a woman who claims that the athlete sexually assaulted her after drugging her at a bar. The woman claimed that Young drugged her with GHB before returning with her to his apartment. The woman is suing Young for unspecified damages.

R&B singer Usher is being sued by a former nanny who claims that the singer fired her abruptly and failed to pay previously agreed-upon wages. The nanny, Cecilia Duncan, is reportedly suing the singer for six figures.

Recently settled lawsuits

Teenage rapper Chief Keef has been ordered to pay $2,600 per month in child support to a teen girl with whom he has a two-year-old child. He is also required to pay back child support and $500 in daycare expenses.

Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee and star running back Orenthal James “O.J.” Simpson was back in a criminal courtroom on May 16th, 2013. This time, O.J. took to the witness stand in the hope of clearing his name in a notorious Las Vegas armed robbery case that ended in 2008 with his conviction and incarceration.

Simpson is currently serving a 15-year sentence in the Lovelock Correctional Center near Reno. Although he will become eligible for parole in approximately five more years, he is petitioning the court for a new trial in an effort to be released from prison sooner. According to media reports and court records, Simpson was the leader of an armed group of men who broke into a hotel room at the Palace Station resort and casino in 2007. Police questioned him regarding his participation in the forceful extraction of sports memorabilia items belonging to him. Charges were pressed and, when the case when to court, Simpson was found guilty of kidnapping, conspiracy and armed robbery for personal gain.

A long wait for a new trial

Simpson’s request for a new trial dates back to 2008. His attorneys alleged that judicial errors and jury misconduct resulted in the wrongful conviction of their client. Although his defense team vowed to appeal the conviction and sentence all the way to the Nevada Supreme Court, Simpson’s attorneys have mainly focused on the new trial strategy.

A Lakeland criminal law attorney would likely pursue a similar strategy as long as their client agreed to play an important role. In Simpson’s case, his turn at the witness stand after four years in prison portrayed him as a humble defendant who heeded inadequate instructions from his legal counsel. He testified that he thought he had the right to take back his valuable family heirlooms.

Simpson is no stranger to the courtroom. His spectacular 1995 acquittal in the murder of his former wife and one of her male friends was underscored by 24-hour media coverage. This time around, however, Simpson’s court appearance has been very subdued by comparison.

Wes Scantlin, lead singer of alternative metal band Puddle of Mudd, has been booked by law enforcement for the second time this month. The Missouri native’s latest arrest was supported by statements of several witnesses who claim Scantlin physically mistreated his former wife Jessica by shaking her and pulling her around by her arm.

Scantlin was arrested for domestic violence Monday evening and taken into custody by members of the Los Angeles Police Department. His bail was set at $20,000. The former couple’s rocky relationship has been well-documented by tabloid media outlets. Their divorce was highlighted by a financial agreement that they reached after Scantlin refused his former wife’s request to invalidate their 2008 prenuptial agreement.

Multiple criminal charges

Syracuse criminal attorneys would have their hands full with Scantlin as their client. The singer’s first arrest this month was on May 7, when LAPD officers pulled Scantlin over for speeding in Hollywood and discovered outstanding arrest warrants.

The 40-year-old rocker has also been the target of various complaints by his former wife, who claims Scantlin repeatedly takes her car without permission and sends her text messages of a threatening nature.

Lindsay Lohan’s once-estranged father Michael Lohan has had to deal with allegations of being a deadbeat dad for much of his time spent in the spotlight. While questions about his character might still abound, at least no one can say that he doesn’t pay child support anymore.

Late last week, Michael Lohan wrote a check to his ex-wife Dina Lohan for $30,422. This is the amount of money, plus penalties, he owes her for failing to pay child support over the past couple of years. According to family court documents, Michael was required to pay $1,500 per month to his wife for help in supporting his minor children.

In the time it took him to pay the child support debt, his daughter Ali, 19, became a legal adult. He will likely have to pay less in child support going forward. However, he will still have to provide regular payments to support his 16-year-old son Cody. It is unclear how the $30k payment was split out, but the court accepted it as full payment.

In the nick of time

Michael Lohan made the payment not a moment too soon — Dina Lohan went to court in April 2013 to complain about Michael’s lack of child support payments. The judge was deliberating whether or not to hold him in contempt when Mr. Logan cut the check and gave it to his ex-wife. Child support attorneys in Boca Raton recommend clients pay child support before a judge rules you in contempt of court, which could lead to extra fines, garnished wages and even jail time.

For his part, Michael Lohan is contrite and apologetic. He says that while he withheld part of the child support payments because he was angry about certain family issues, but is now determined to “make things right” with his children and ex-wife. The prosecution says that Lambesis gave the agent an envelope with $1,000 in cash, photographs, an address, gate code and instructions on how to kill her. The agent turned Lambesis in to authorities. His wife is currently “in seclusion” with their three children.

The strange and twisted case

Lambesis, 32, reportedly met a man at the gym, an agent going by the alias “Red,” who recorded that Lambesis said he wanted his wife killed. He complained that his wife made it difficult for him to see their children since the end of their marriage. They were in the process of divorcing after Lambesis emailed his wife while on tour in 2012 saying that he no longer believed in God, didn’t love her and wanted to get a divorce.

Lambesis’ defense

Lambesis pleaded not guilty in court. An attorney for Lambesis said that he was set up by the undercover agent and that Lambesis had no intent to hurt anybody. The attorney further said that the undercover agent was “being fed something” by someone who was “out to save his own skin” by “trumping things up.”

Minneapolis criminal lawyers know that undercover work is not as cut and dry as prosecution makes it out to be. Cases are often filled with uncertainty and hearsay, and it is criminal defense attorneys’ job to point out flaws in the prosecutions’ arguments and challenge what evidence may be deemed admissible.

Lambesis’ bail

The judge set Lambesis’ bail at $3 million, which he is expected to pay, but he must wear a GPS monitoring device at all times. He is also prohibited from contacting his wife or children and may not leave the San Diego area. This may interfere with his ability to play a 30-city U.S. tour scheduled for summer 2013, and his attorney says that he will ask the judge for permission to travel.

If he is convicted, Lambesis faces jail time of up to nine years.

Actor Terrence Howard has finally ended his 15-month-long divorce proceedings, during which he and his wife, Michelle Ghent, leveled outrageous accusations against one another and were engaged in a bitter dispute over property division, support payments and bank accounts.

Throughout the divorce proceedings, the couple behaved in ways the average Fort Lauderdale divorce attorney is all too familiar with from dealing with contested divorces. Rather than refraining from making public statements, both Howard and his estranged wife would speak to the media about how terribly the other had treated them during the marriage.

Where the marriage went wrong

The actor claimed that Ghent used to hurl racist epithets at him and declare that she “never wanted to marry a ****” and “didn’t want to have **** children” with him. He said that she once even threatened to “have him killed by Russians.”

For her part, Ghent claimed that Howard was physically abusive and used to hit her, throw her down and otherwise hurt her. She tried to get a restraining order against him in 2010 and filed for another one while their divorce was ongoing.

Who got what

The divorce turned out to be quite lucrative for Howard. He got to keep all of their shared properties, a 1996 Jeep Commander, a 2011 Range Rover and other vehicles. He will also keep most of their shared bank accounts.

For her part, Ghent got to keep a BMW X5, a few shared bank accounts and a bike. She will also be the beneficiary of an $850,000 life insurance policy and will receive $5,800 per month in spousal support until she is either married or until $1 million is paid out.

The terms of the divorce agreement also stipulated that neither Howard nor his ex-wife would publish, copy or distribute photographs of the other party’s image or likeness.

Howard and Ghent each deny the other’s allegations, and it is likely that neither will press charges. Still, for its sheer animosity and meanness, this divorce was like a train wreck; now that it’s over, maybe the entertainment industry can finally look away.

Lisa Bonet, who played Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show, filed a lawsuit late last week against a Burbank, CA driver who struck her vehicle in 2011. According to Los Angeles County Superior Court records, Bonet is seeking compensation for damages she and her children allegedly sustained as a result of the car crash.

Bonet is married to Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa; their children were in the vehicle during the accident.

About the crash

Bonet, 45, was driving her Audi through the well-heeled Los Angeles suburb of Burbank when the other driver hit her vehicle. Her lawsuit states that she, her 5-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son all required medical treatment, including stitches.

While the lawsuit did not list specific injuries, Bonet says that she suffered shocks to her neck, head and back. The suit also did not list specific details about the crash, but Bonet has visible scarring on her face stemming from the incident. As in this case, car accident lawyers in NJ might advise you to keep details of your lawsuit confidential for strategic reasons. The damages in the lawsuit were also unspecified.

The results of the suit will be based on Bonet’s ability to establish the other driver’s fault in the accident. As of right now, the identity of the driver who crashed into Bonet’s vehicle has not been made public.

Being a celebrity definitely has its perks. Many of America’s favorite stars live in opulent homes, eat the best food and buy the best clothing. However, not even their celebrity status can save some stars from judgment day. Even the world’s most beloved celebrities have to face a judge for sentencing from time to time. Here’s the roundup of last week’s celebrity sentencing and plea deal news.

Troubled young actress Amanda Bynes made a plea deal last Wednesday to escape serving jail time for driving with a suspended license. Bynes pleaded no contest to the charges, which are connected to a 2012 traffic incident in Burbank, California. In exchange for her plea of no contest, Bynes will be required to pay a $300 fine and successfully complete three years of probation.

Orlando Bloom, who starred on the hit show That’s So Raven, is in legal trouble again over a 2011 DUI. According to the judge who issued a bench warrant for Bloom’s arrest this past week, the actor-singer has failed to prove that he enrolled in an alcohol education class, which was a condition of his earlier DUI sentence. Bloom’s lawyers have not yet made a statement about the actor’s failure to appear in court, but a Salt Lake City criminal attorney would most likely feel extreme frustration if one of their clients behaved in such a manner.

Peter Robbins, the voice actor who played Charlie Brown in several holiday specials, has been sentenced in connection with stalking charges. Robbins was accused of stalking and threatening his ex-girlfriend and her plastic surgeon. The voice actor was sentenced to one year in jail but received credit for time served. He will also be required to complete five years of probation, stay away from his ex for 10 years and pay her restitution in the amount of $15,081.90.
