Here’s hoping that some celebs take heed after hearing about Courtney Love’s Twitter lawsuit. Love has found out the hard way what can happen when you say too much.
The outspoken, often controversial Hole singer was recently sued by designer Dawn Simorangkir for her insulting Twitter rants. This marks the first celebrity Twitter lawsuit. Apparently, people think celebrities’ opinions really matter.
According to News.com, celebrity Twitter lawsuit all began when Simorangkir demanded payment for five outfits she had completed for Love. Love, outraged that someone actually wanted her to pay for a service rendered, began her tirade on Twitter.
Love accused Simorangkir of several criminal activities, including prostitution and drug use, and of using Love to promote the designer’s line. The insults went on for four days and reached her 40,000 followers.
Simorangkir responded by filing suit against the rocker, alleging that the celebrity Twitter postings damaged her reputation. Love countered that there was no defamation, and even if there was, there was no damage.
This could have been the first time a jury would be asked to decide whether celebrity Twitter postings could be considered libel.
Unfortunately, we still won’t know. Courtney Love settled the Twitter lawsuit for $430,000.
