Using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter opens every person up to the possibility of account hacking or privacy issues, but high-profile celebrities are especially vulnerable.

Despite the risks, though, technology gurus say celebs can’t afford to cut themselves off from networking sites.

Stars like Miley Cyrus and John Mayer have shut down their Twitter accounts, leaving their fans scratching their collective heads. In the case of singer and musician John Mayer, deleting his Twitter feed meant leaving behind the 3.7 million followers who subscribed to him.

Gaurav Mishra, the digital and social media director of a leading Asian strategic communications firm, believes abandoning social media is a bad move for celebrities, who need outlets like Twitter and Facebook for publicity and to remain connected with their fans.

“With a few exceptions, celebrities continue to be active online and they take great pains to create and manage their image, directly influence media and share tidbits of events in their life with fans and followers,” said Mishra.

Though issues with privacy remain a concern for some stars, CyberMedia research lead analyst Naveen Mishra acknowledges the importance of having an account: “The number of followers on Twitter is often seen as a measure of popularity of stars as well as politicians.”
