Martin Garbus has represented many entertainment, political and social celebrities. A graduate of New York University Law School, Garbus began his legal career in 1963 after being admitted to the United States Supreme Court Bar. He is best known as being an advocate for First Amendment rights and has represented many prominent domestic and international political figures including Cesar Chavez, Vaclav Havel, Andrei Sakharov and Nelson Mandela.

Garbus’ client list reads like directory of major publishing houses including Penguin Books, Random House Publishers and Scholastic Books. In addition print media, Garbus has also represented major motion picture studios including Lucas Films, Miramax, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Brothers. By having a long-term career in the entertainment industry, Garbus has been able to form many celebrity relationships and has been able to represent multiple actors and actresses including  Lauren Bacall, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Richard Gere, Martin Lawrence, Spike Lee, Al Pacino and Robert Redford. Celebrity authors Tom Brokaw, Terry McMillian, and Ronald and Nancy Reagan have all chosen to request Garbus’ legal expertise. Most recently, Garbus represented controversial radio host Don Imus after he was fired by CBS.

In addition to representing celebrities, Garbus has also filed legal proceedings on behalf of others to sue celebrities. One of the most noted cases Garbus was involved in was representing French composer, Jacques Loussier, who brought a suit against rap superstar Eminem. Because of his work in the entertainment industry, Garbus has gained widespread recognition for his work being recognized by Business Week, Forbes, Newsweek, Super Lawyers Magazine, Time Magazine and The Guardian.

Television news outlets also recognize Garbus’ First Amendment and Civil Practice experience employing him as a guest commentator on networks such as ABC, CBS, CNN, Court TV, Fox News, NBC and PBS.

His work with First Amendment issues has caught the attention of many prestigious organizations and has afforded Garbus numerous awards including the 2007 Civil Liberties Award, the 2007 PEN USA First Amendment Award of Honor and the 2004 New York University Law Alumni Achievement Award. He was listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law and was indoctrinated into the Hunter College Hall of Fame in 2005.

When not representing clients, Garbus engages in his other passion; writing. Presently, he has written six books and numerous legal-related articles.
